Order Protection is a Digital Upsell preset for offering shoppers an optional insurance policy at checkout — protection against loss, theft, or damage in transit for a small fee. Unlike third-party shipping insurance, you keep 100% of the revenue.
This article walks through the protection-specific setup. For the full Digital Upsell feature reference (Component Placement, Display Conditions, Timer, etc.), see Setting up upsells in checkout.
Where to find it
Go to Convert > Extensions in the left-side menu. Click Add Extension in the top-right corner and select Digital Upsell.
Step 1: Install the token
At the top of the Settings tab you'll see the Token for Shopify section. Click View Detailed Installation Instructions for the full walkthrough. Copy the token (it looks like custom_upsell_XXXXXXX) and paste it into the Custom Upsell Token component in your Shopify Theme Editor under your checkout settings.
Step 2: Configure the offer
In the Settings tab, set:
Internal Name — for your reference only (e.g. "Order Protection").
Title — what shoppers see at checkout (e.g. "Extra Protection").
Description text — the supporting line (e.g. "Get Extra Protection with your Order!").
Upload product image — the icon for the offer (e.g. a box-and-checkmark visual).
Step 3: Set the price
Under Choose Type, pick:
Fixed Rate — a flat fee (e.g. $2.99). Most stores use this for protection.
Percent — calculated as a percentage of the cart total.
Step 4: Tag the order
Under Custom Order Tags, type a tag name to auto-apply to any order that includes protection. Tagged orders are easy to filter on the Verify, Assign, and Track screens.
Tick Add Another Priority Processing Tag and Pin Order to Top of PDQ Screen if you want protected orders pinned for prioritized fulfillment.
Optional: Add a tooltip
Toggle Enable Tooltip for Extra Details to show an info icon next to the offer. Use it to spell out what's covered (loss, theft, damage) and the claims process — up to 5,000 characters.
Notes
Auto-Select Only Free Digital Item at Checkout only triggers when the upsell is set to $0. For paid protection, shoppers tick the box themselves.
To restrict when protection appears (e.g. only above a certain cart value, or only for certain destinations), use Display Conditions on the extension. See the main Digital Upsell setup guide for the full list.
To run a margin-aware rule (e.g. only offer protection on profitable carts), see Margin-based display rules for Extensions.
