The best time to sell someone something is the moment right after they've bought. Their card is out, they already decided to trust you, and the hard part is done. One-Click Upsell uses those few seconds: the shopper sees one relevant offer after they pay, before the thank-you page, and a single tap adds it to the order they just placed - no forms, no re-entering a card, no second checkout. Not interested? One tap to decline, and they're on the confirmation page.
Two types of offer
When you create an offer, you pick its Upsell type:
Add Product - offer an extra product on top of what they bought. The original items stay; the new item is added and charged to the same card.
Swap Product - offer to replace a product they just bought with a different (usually upgraded) version. The original item is removed, the new one added, and the customer is charged only the price difference - or refunded the difference if the new item is cheaper. Any discount on the original item is factored in, so they're charged based on what they actually paid.
Step 1: Create the offer
Go to Retain → One Click Upsell and click Add one click upsell. On the Settings tab:
Internal Name (required) and Internal Description — for your reference only; customers never see these.
Upsell type - Add Product or Swap Product.
Auto-Deduct Inventory of Upsell Products - automatically deducts stock for products added via the upsell, using the location logic in your shipping methods.
When payment fails - choose Keep In Cart For Up To [X] Min (matches your edit window, so the shopper can retry) or Remove From Cart (released immediately on a failed payment).
Step 2: Build the flow
On the Flow configuration tab, add a rule:
IF the order contains - Any product, a Specific product, or Smart (PDQ chooses a relevant match to what they just bought).
THEN offer to add (or offer to swap them for) - pick the product to offer, its edit window (e.g. 10 minutes), and an optional discount (percentage or fixed) so the one-time offer actually feels like one.
You can branch the flow: after an offer, set what happens If accepted (show a second offer) or If declined (show a down sell). Add as many rules as you need with Add Rule / Add Swap Rule.
Step 3: Choose who sees it
On the Display Conditions tab, click Add Rule Group to limit the offer - e.g. first-time vs. returning customers, AOV bands, device, or location. Leave it empty to show to everyone.
Step 4: Test, then go live
Use the status dropdown (top of the offer) to switch between Live, Test Mode, and Disabled. Run it in Test Mode to place a test order and confirm the offer appears and charges correctly, then set it Live.
Good to know
Payment methods: Because of a Shopify platform limitation, offers are shown only to customers who pay by card or with Shop Pay. Express checkout methods (Apple Pay, PayPal, etc.) and non-default currencies are not supported.
Timing: The order must not be fulfilled yet for the offer to work - the edit window closes once fulfilment starts.
One order, one charge: Accepted offers stay on the same order with a single additional charge (or a single refund for a cheaper swap) - never a second transaction.
Change limit: There's a cap on how many post-purchase changes one order can take, so a shopper can't upsell/swap repeatedly on the same purchase.
Reading your results
The metrics row (with a date-range selector) tracks Impressions, Total Revenue, Number of Products Added, Average Order Value Lift, Conversion Rate, and Engaged Orders.
One-Click Upsell may need to be enabled for your store - if you don't see it under Retain, message your CSM. (early access)
