Setting up Product Upgrade

Configure upgrade paths so shoppers can switch to a bundle or variant at checkout

This guide walks you through setting up the Product Upgrade extension — from adding it to your checkout to configuring which products trigger which upgrade.

Step 1: Add the extension

Go to Checkout Content in the left-side menu. Click Add Extension, then select Product Upgrade.

Step 2: Create an upgrade rule

Each rule maps a trigger product to an upgrade product:

  • Trigger Product — the item that needs to be in the shopper's cart for the upgrade to appear. You can match by product, variant, tag, or collection.

  • Upgrade Product — the bundle, variant, or higher-tier product the shopper can switch to.

Click Add Rule to create your first mapping.

Step 3: Configure segmentation

Decide who sees the upgrade prompt. Options include:

  • All shoppers with the trigger product in their cart

  • Specific segments — first-time vs. returning customers, device type, or custom segments

This lets you A/B test the extension on a segment before rolling it out to 100%.

Step 4: Customize appearance

Adjust how the upgrade dropdown looks in checkout:

  • Display Title — the label shoppers see (e.g., "Upgrade to a bundle", "Switch to premium")

  • Dropdown style — match your brand's fonts and colors

Step 5: Save and enable

Click Save, then toggle the extension to Active. The upgrade prompt will start appearing for shoppers who match your rules.

Tips

  • Start with one or two high-value upgrade paths. Test before adding more.

  • Use A/B testing to measure uplift. Ask your CSM to set up a test, or go to A/B Tests in the dashboard.

  • Products in the upgrade dropdown need to be active and in stock in your Shopify store.

  • If a trigger product has no matching upgrade configured, nothing shows. Shoppers won't see an empty dropdown.
