Gift Note lets shoppers mark their order as a gift, add a personal gift message, and optionally provide a recipient email address - all directly inside the Shopify checkout. It's a lightweight way to support gifting without sending shoppers elsewhere.
How it works
A "This order is a gift" checkbox appears in checkout. It can be pre-ticked by default.
When checked, a gift message field and, optionally, a recipient email address field are revealed.
The gift message and recipient details are saved to the order so you can act on them during fulfilment.
Display conditions control when and for whom the Gift Note appears.
Setting it up in PDQ
Go to Extensions → Add Extension and choose Gift Note. This is a single-page extension - all configuration lives on one screen.
Token for Shopify - copy the token (format
gift_note_…) to paste into Shopify.Internal Name / Internal Description - used only to organize your extensions; not shown to shoppers.
Gift message
Checkbox Display Text - the label for the gift toggle (e.g. "This order is a gift").
Preselected - when enabled, the checkbox is ticked by default, so the message field shows immediately.
Message Input Placeholder Text - placeholder inside the gift message field (e.g. "Gift message"). The field has a character limit, shown as a counter in checkout (e.g. 0/120).
Collect recipient email address
Toggle Collect recipient email address on to reveal an email field for the gift recipient.
Email Input Placeholder Text - placeholder inside the email field (e.g. "Recipient email address").
📌 Please note: If you want to send order notifications to the gift recipient, you'll need to set up an email recipe in the Integrations tab - collecting the email here does not send notifications on its own.
Display conditions
Use Display conditions to control when and for whom the Gift Note appears ("This Gift Note Will Only Appear If…"). Rules are built from the Select dropdown (cart attribute, cart attribute key/value, and the full PDQ condition set) and combine into groups for AND/OR logic.
Installing in Shopify
In Shopify, go to Settings → Checkout and click Customize on your live checkout.
Add the PDQ Gift note block where you want it (standalone in the checkout, or inside the shipping method section).
Enter an Internal name and paste the token into Enter desired gift note token.
Click Save.
What the shopper sees at checkout
The shopper sees the "This order is a gift" checkbox (pre-ticked if configured). When checked, the gift message field appears with its character counter, along with the recipient email address field if enabled. The details are attached to the order for you.
