Setting up PDQ Cash Back in checkout

Show card-sponsored cashback offers to eligible shoppers - funded by the card issuers, at no cost to you

PDQ Cash Back shows card-sponsored cashback offers to eligible shoppers at checkout and again on the thank-you page. Rewards are funded by the card issuers (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) - not by you - so it's a surprise-and-delight incentive at no cost to your store, designed to lift conversion and repeat purchases.

Requirements: Shopify Plus only. Currently available for US checkouts only. The block must be added to both the checkout page and the thank-you page for the extension to work.

How it works

  1. At checkout, PDQ securely sends encrypted shopper identifiers (e.g. email, phone, or card last-4) to the rewards provider.

  2. The provider checks whether the shopper is eligible and, if so, returns a reward (e.g. "$10 bonus reward").

  3. An offer banner appears in checkout - only for eligible shoppers. Eligibility depends on the cards the shopper holds and order context (e.g. a minimum cart value).

  4. After purchase, a confirmation banner appears on the thank-you page - but only if the shopper paid with the qualifying card.

Setting it up in PDQ

Go to Extensions → Add Extension and choose Cash Back. This is a single-page extension - all configuration lives on one screen.

  • Token for Shopify - copy the token (format pdqcashback_…) to paste into the Shopify blocks during installation.

  • Internal Name / Internal Description - used only to organize your extensions; not shown to shoppers.

  • Display rules - control who sees the offer. Because the feature is US-only, add a rule for Countries / is / United States.

  • Use Historical Data - when enabled, pulls the last 365 days of payment-info data to improve offer matching.

📌 Behaviour note: Only a subset of shoppers (typically ~10–20%) will ever see an offer, because eligibility depends on the payment cards they hold. Not seeing a banner in a test session usually means that test shopper isn't eligible - not that the extension is broken.

✅ QA tip: After setting up in draft, test with a US shipping address and a cart over $50, using the demo shopper email demo@pdq.com, to confirm offers render.

Installing in Shopify

Cash Back requires two blocks - one on the checkout page and one on the thank-you page (Shopify Plus only).

  1. In Shopify, go to Settings → Checkout and click Customize.

  2. On the checkout page, add the PDQ Cash back block. Recommended placement: above the payment section (on mobile, near the top of the cart details).

  3. Paste the token into PDQ Cashback Token.

  4. Repeat on the Thank you page: add the PDQ Cash back block and paste the same token.

  5. Click Save.

What the shopper sees

Eligible shoppers see a card-branded offer banner - for example, "Earn a $10 bonus reward when you use your Real Rewards Visa® credit card on this purchase!" — with the offer terms (e.g. "Minimum Transaction $50, Limited Time Offer"). After paying with the qualifying card, a matching confirmation appears on the thank-you page.
