If a shipping rate looks off on orders paid with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Shop Pay, it's almost always down to how those express wallets share address data - not a PDQ error. Here's what's happening and what you can do.
Why it happens
In a normal checkout, the shopper types their full address first, so PDQ calculates rates from complete data. Express wallets work differently: Shopify runs a standard checkout behind the scenes using the same shipping setup, but the address the wallet provides at the moment rates are calculated is partial.
At rate time, an express wallet sends:
✅ Country, State/Province, City, ZIP/Postal code
❌ Street address and customer name — withheld until after payment is confirmed
Because the street address only arrives after payment, the rate shown at checkout was calculated without it. PDQ has no way to know the address was partial or to request the rest.
What it can affect
Anything that depends on a complete address, including:
The rate zone the order falls into - so a rate can come out slightly too high or too low or the cart can see fallback rates instead of live rates
Delivery promise dates
A/B test assignment
Whether a split cart is recognized as multi-origin - so express-wallet orders can still show a doubled charge even with the multi-origin setting on (see "Multi-origin shipping: preventing doubled charges on split orders")
Is this a bug?
No. This is how accelerated/express checkouts work across all carrier-calculated shipping apps on Shopify - the wallet withholds the street address for privacy until the shopper confirms payment (e.g. with Face ID / Touch ID). Shopify has confirmed this is expected platform behaviour, and there's no fix available from Apple, Google, or Shopify.
What can help
If discrepancies recur on wallet orders, your PDQ contact can tune PDQ's rate cache so express-wallet requests aren't matched to a different address's cached rate.
For products where shipping cost varies a lot by exact address, a flatter or simplified rate keeps the wallet estimate and the true cost aligned.
Ask your PDQ contact to measure how many of your orders use express wallets and the size of any impact before making changes.
